    How the count works

The calculator counts every business day after the date you pick, up to and including today. Saturdays, Sundays and the holidays in the chosen set are skipped. From Monday, November 9, 2026 to Friday, November 13, 2026 that is 3 business days: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, with Veterans Day on Wednesday left out.

The period table works slightly differently, because a period starts on its first day: it counts from the 1st of the month, quarter or year through today, both included. That matches how people talk about “business days so far this month”.

Why count business days since a date

Many deadlines and service promises are written in business days: a support ticket answered within 2 business days, a refund issued within 10, a document that must be returned within 5. Counting from the day the clock started tells you whether the deadline has passed and by how much. Check the exact wording of the deadline, since some organizations count the first day and others do not; tick “Count the start date” to match.

    Worked examples

    • From Monday, October 5, 2026 to Friday, October 30, 2026: 18 business days. Columbus Day on October 12 is skipped.
    • From Wednesday, December 31, 2025 to Friday, January 30, 2026: 20 business days, with New Year’s Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day skipped.
    • The whole first quarter of 2026, counting January 1: 61 business days out of 90 calendar days.

    Has a deadline passed?

If something was due within 10 business days of Monday, October 5, 2026, the last day was Tuesday, October 20, 2026, because Columbus Day is skipped. On any later date, the count since October 5 is already over 10. To find a due date before it arrives, add the business days to the start date with the add or subtract business days calculator.

    Calendar days elapsed

The result also shows calendar days, every date between the start and today, which is the figure to use when a rule says “days” without “business”. From Monday, October 5 to Friday, October 30, 2026 is 25 calendar days but only 18 business days. The gap between the two numbers is the weekends and holidays in the period.

    Frequently asked questions

How many business days have passed since January 1?

From January 1 through today (Saturday, November 7, 2026), both included, 214 business days have passed, out of 311 calendar days. Weekends and US federal holidays are not counted.

    Does the count include today?

Yes. The calculator counts the business days after the start date up to and including today, so a request made yesterday that is still open today has been open 1 business day. If today is a weekend or a holiday, it adds nothing.

What if the start date was a weekend?

The start date itself is not counted unless you tick “Count the start date”, so a weekend start makes no difference: counting from Saturday, November 7, 2026 to Friday, November 13, 2026 gives 4 business days, the same as counting from the Sunday.
