Work weeks and calendar weeks

There are two ways to turn business days into weeks. Work weeks divide by five, because a standard business week is Monday to Friday: 10 business days is 2 work weeks, 7 is 1.4. This is the figure for effort, such as how many working weeks a task will occupy.

Calendar weeks measure elapsed time. They count from today to the date the business days run out, so they include the weekends in between and any holidays. Ten business days usually take exactly two calendar weeks, but a holiday such as Thanksgiving stretches that by a day, and starting on a weekend shifts it too.

Ranges like 7–10 business days

Shipping and processing times are often quoted as a range. Convert both ends: 7–10 business days is 1.4–2 work weeks, and from today it ends between the dates shown in the table. The lower number gives the earliest date and the higher number the latest.

Weeks back to business days

Going the other way, multiply by five: 1 work week is 5 business days, 2 weeks is 10, 4 weeks is 20 and 6 weeks is 30. Subtract one for each holiday that falls on a weekday in the period. The six weeks from Sunday, November 1, 2026 through Sunday, December 13, 2026 hold 28 business days, because Veterans Day and Thanksgiving fall inside.

Fractions of a work week

A fraction of a work week converts back at five business days per week: 0.2 is one day, 0.4 two, 0.6 three and 0.8 four. So 1.4 work weeks is one week and two business days, and 2.6 is two weeks and three days.

When a quote says weeks

A seller who promises delivery “in 2 weeks” usually means calendar weeks, 14 days. A plan that says a task takes “2 weeks of work” usually means 10 business days, which can stretch past 14 calendar days if a holiday falls inside. When the difference matters, ask which one is meant, or convert both ways with the table above.

Rounding

Weeks are shown to one decimal place. 1.4 weeks is about a week and three days. For an exact date rather than a week count, use business days from today.

Frequently asked questions
